The first game of over 60’s cricket in Australia, was played in Victoria at the Brighton Union Cricket Club, on Saturday 4th January 2003. The game was between a team from south of the Yarra and a team from north of the Yarra.

In August 2009, a meeting took place at the Gold Diggers Arms Hotel Newtown with the aim of to begin a Geelong Over 60’s team.  John Hammer was Victorian Over 60’s Cricket Association (VOSCA) Secretary and came from Melbourne to provide advice, encouragement and enthusiasm.  There were only two prospective players present together with a potential one, once he turned 60.

At a second meeting a couple of weeks later, Warwick Hadfield was appointed President and Gordon Abraham was the initial Secretary, Treasurer, Selector, and VOSCA Representative. The club was Geelong Over 60 Cricket Club. Through Warwick’s good connections, the club was fortunate to have the generous support of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club who provided a ground on some Sundays, some old playing kits and moral support. Bernie Clancy was appointed captain for the first season.

The Club’s first game was against Casey on 8th October 2009 at Queens Park, and with the aid of 3 “fill-in” players, was able to record a win.

Over the next few weeks, a number of new players joined the ranks (some still playing with the club), and later in the season, the Club was able to field a full team. At the end of our first season, the club had Warwick Hadfield as President, Graham Mulroney as Secretary, Daryl Tucker as Treasurer, Robert Agg as Club Captain and Lindsay Fisher as Team Manager.

A highlight for the club in these early years was the selection of Robert Agg in the first Veterans Over 60’s side to tour England, and then to captain Australia for two matches in a subsequent English tour of Australia. This selection of Robert, a well-respected identity in Geelong cricket, to such a position, gave a lot of credibility to the club in its venture into veteran’s cricket.

In 2012, the National Championships were held between club-based teams. The Geelong Over 60’s side were the undefeated champions in Division 3.

March 2014 saw Don Everett become the first player to play 50 games for the club.

The Club grew in numbers over the next few years, and in 2014 participated in the inaugural 4 club competition, now known as the Border Cup. 2015 saw the Club able to enter a second side in the Over 60 competition, playing 8 games, and also participated for the first time in the Echuca Carnival. This season Rob Agg took over as President and Ian Pritchard replaced him in his role as Club Captain.

From 2015 / 2016 until 2020 /2021 the Club participated in a mid-week competition between clubs.

Season 2016 /2017 saw the Club’s second side entered to play the full 16 game Over 60’s season. Graham Mulroney become the first to play 100 games for the club in February 2016.

On 21st February 2016, at a Special General Meeting, the members voted unanimously to change the name of the club to Geelong Seniors Cricket Club.

At the 2017 A.G.M., an amendment to the Club Rules was passed that allowed the Club to elect Life Members of the Club. Later that season, Graham Mulroney, the long serving secretary was elected as the first Life Member of Geelong Seniors Cricket Club.

2017 / 2018 saw Greg Lott take over from Rob Agg as President, and Richard Sykes was now the Treasurer.

2018 saw the Club commence hiring a Community Bus from the City of Greater Geelong to travel to away games. To assist with this, a trailer was purchased to carry the player’s kits following a donation from King’s Funerals.

Graham Mulroney stood down as Secretary in 2020 after 11 years in the position, and Bruce Hogan was appointed into the role.

Veterans Cricket Victoria commenced an Over 70’s competition in 2021 / 2022, with most games on Tuesdays but some games on Sunday. Our first game was played on 21st October against A.C.S. at Moorabbin. Geelong has had a side in this competition since inception.

Back Row: John Costello, Bruce Hogan, Greg Lott, John Williams, Rob. Foster, Neville Crane.
Front Row: Ian Pritchard, Gwen Askham, Lindsay Fisher, John Scott, Ian Holliday, John Graham.

Lindsay Fisher was the first player to play 200 games for the club in May 2022.
